Our History
The grocery store based education module began as a research project in 1994, but after it came to completion, students wanted to keep the project going, introducing the question, “Could this program be sustainable as club?” The sustainability was tested for 6 years, and a paper was published proving the sustainability of the club (MEDSURG Nursing).
The Asian Pacific Islander (API) Moore’s Cancer Outreach Team is now a UC San Diego sanctioned club. The club’s mission is to reduce the rates of cancer morbidity and mortality among the API community. The team follows a grocery store based education module in which students outreach to the API community at Asian grocery stores. UCSD and SDSU students have been engaged in this program since the spring of 1994.
During outreaches, students distribute brochures containing life-saving information. With Dr. Sadler as the club’s program mentor, the team has reached almost 11,000 members of the API community for the breast cancer module alone. There are two dozen peer-reviewed publications by Dr. Sadler supporting how and why this program works. After this program proved to be highly effective,it was then applied to other health issues.
